One of our favorite hiking options for those who want to explore the magic
of a primary tropical cloud forest, but without having to drive a very long way to get there. This protected area is located in the County of Vasquez de Coronado and borders the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Along the way there will be a stop at the famous Neo-Gothic Church of San Isidro de Coronado, the only one of its kind in all Central America. Once you reach El Refugio (The Refuge) a rustic cottage that works as their restaurant at the entrance of their private property, you’ll enjoy an energetic snack-breakfast cooked in their wood oven, which imparts food a very nice and distinctive flavor. Escorted by your experienced guide, you’ll hike at a comfortable pace more than five kilometres of trails inside this majestic forest. An excellent opportunity to observe a great diversity of
mountain birds (including the resplendent Quetzal, on certain months of the year) evergreen pastures, different forest landscapes, impressive views of Braulio Carrillo Park and the Irazu Volcano, and even a beautiful waterfall that will appear in front of you when you least expected it. Trails are well kept, so all members of the family can go on this scenic excursion. After returning to El Refugio, you’ll enjoy a delicious Costa Rican home-style lunch. In the afternoon you’ll visit their dairy farm, watch its operation (including cow milking in the traditional way) and learn why Coronado is considered one of Costa Rica’s best places for milk production.
This Tour leaves Don Carlos Hotel at 6:30 a.m. and gets back around 3:00 p.m. Includes a snack-breakfast and lunch.
The Bird-Watching Tour leaves earlier (5:30 a.m.) and includes a full breakfast and lunch. Since you do birding both in the early morning and also later in the day, the visit to the dairy farm is not possible. There are approximately 200 species of birds in these mountains and participants will have exclusive trails for bird-watchers and their own specialized birding guides.
*A minimum of 02 participants are required for either one of these Tours*
